Michelin Development helps engineering company shape up for future growth

A Carnoustie engineering company is gearing up for new markets and opportunities with support from Michelin Development.

J&P Metal Technologies has invested in industry-leading laser technology machinery to broaden the scope of its sheet metal fabrication business and create new roles at the site.

The new machine, bought with the help of a low-cost loan from Michelin Development, will enable the family-run business to produce complex shapes in sheet metal to pinpoint accuracy.

This will pave the way for J&P Metal Technologies to enter into new markets, creating high value products including bespoke garden features, landscape and architectural designs, as well equipment for the renewable energy sector.

It will also help to increase the production of its bespoke self-contained safety cab units which are used in manufacturing and construction environments.

As a result of the investment, which has also been support by Scottish Enterprise, J&P Metal Technologies is now looking to increase its workforce in the future from 11 staff members to 16, including two new apprenticeships.

Brian Cairns, of Michelin Development in Dundee, said: “J&P Metal Technologies has an extensive track record going back more than 50 years in Carnoustie, where it has built up a strong reputation for its work in sectors including oil, gas, hydraulics, surface finishing and blasting.

“The introduction of the new laser cutting machine will enable the business to take advantage of new market opportunities, creating new roles in engineering for the future.

“This is just the type of forward-thinking business Michelin Development looks to support.”

With services including subsidised loans, grants, and free, independent, expert advice to set out routes to growth for local businesses, Michelin Development supports high-potential, small and medium-sized enterprises in and around the Dundee region.
